Sited on the junction of two rivers, York is one of the best preserved medieval walled cities in Britain.
You will find a wealth of things to see and places to go celebrating 2,000 years of (fairly disastrous) history from the Romans and Vikings to the present day. There is the Gothic majesty of the Minster, the homely medieval charm of the Shambles, the Castle Museum with its complete full size Victorian street of Kirkgate and the smaller Edwardian Half Moon Court; the Jorvik Viking Centre, the largest Railway Museum in the world, and not forgetting the Richard III Museum. It is said that King Richard actually commissioned the top story of the superb gate of Monk Bar and the museum is situated in the gateway itself (only a 2 minute walk). |
You can take a guided walking / ghost tour and discover hidden treasures, or sit back on a Bus Tour or River Cruise. You can walk on the City Walls or meander through a maze of Snickelways (alleyways). The shops vary from Craft and Antiques to up-to-the-minute fashion!
The retail shopping park of Vanguard at Monks Cross is easily accessible by car or Park and Ride bus, as is the Designer Outlet near Fulford on the A64/A19 junction to the south of York.
The Yorkshire countryside is well worth exploring: the North York Moors and Steam Railway, the Dales, Castle Howard, the Coast - Whitby, Scarborough Bridlington - are all accessible by car or Coach
